Scuola Grande di S. Rocco

For those who wish to explore the artistic heart of Venice, this walk focuses on two of its most extraordinary landmarks: the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and the Church of the Frari. The tour begins at the Scuola Grande, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture that houses the magnificent cycle of paintings by Tintoretto, celebrating faith, devotion, and the brilliance of Venetian art.

Just a short walk away, the Church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari reveals another side of Venice’s soul. Behind its austere Gothic façade lies a treasure trove of masterpieces by Titian, Bellini, Donatello, and Vivarini, along with the monumental tombs of the great masters themselves.

The experience includes pick-up at your hotel (if located in Venice) and offers an unforgettable journey through art, history, and spirituality. The two buildings are so close to each other that they ought to be visited in a single trip.

Itinerary

  1. church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari
Just as sumptuous is the imposing church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, known for short as Frari. Its Gothic structure is simple, while the interior is rich in detail. We could almost call it an art gallery for its array of paintings by Vivarini, Bellini, Tiziano and the only work by Donatello in the city today, carefully guarded inside. On the other hand, we could call it a pantheon for its monumental tombs raised over the centuries for doges and artists such as Tiziano and Canova.
  2. Scuola Grande di S. Rocco
The Scuola Grande di San Rocco brings together many features of Venetian life. Firstly, devotion to a saint, namely, San Rocco, who was the protector against the plague which had repeatedly afflicted the population. Moreover, as a ‘Scuola’ it was a pivotal institution in the social and political life of the Republic; furthermore, the Scuola Grande exhibits the Renaissance architecture so prevalent around the city and the magnificent paintings of Jacopo Tintoretto predominantly adorn the building.
